Hope Mills was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the mid-18th century. They were drawn to the area because of its fertile soil and the abundance of water power from the Little Rockfish Creek. By the early 19th century, the town had grown into a bustling community centered around a large grist mill.

During the Civil War, Hope Mills served as an important supply center for Confederate troops. The town's grist mill was used to produce flour and cornmeal for soldiers, and the Little Rockfish Creek was used to transport supplies.

In the early 20th century, the town became a hub for the textile industry. Several mills were built along the Little Rockfish Creek, and the town's population boomed as workers flocked to the area to find work.

In 1945, a catastrophic flood caused by Hurricane Diane devastated the town. The floodwaters destroyed homes, businesses, and mills, and left much of the town in ruins. Despite the damage, the people of Hope Mills banded together to rebuild their community.
